The founder's story
I built this for myself
Wing Yuen · Founder & CTO, Japanese SenSei
I'm originally from Hong Kong. I moved to Japan in 2021 — fell in love with the culture, the food, the people. But learning Japanese? That was a different story. I tried everything — textbooks, apps, group classes, private tutors. Nothing stuck.
I've always had ADHD. For as long as I can remember, my brain works differently. The traditional methods — sitting still, memorising lists, following rigid lesson plans — were never going to work for someone like me. It wasn't a lack of effort. It was the wrong approach.
I needed something different. A teacher who would come to me, not the other way around. One who would text me every day, keep things interesting, and adapt to my pace. Someone I actually looked forward to hearing from.
So I built it. Japanese SenSei started as a tool for myself — an AI teacher that lived in Telegram and texted me like a friend. It taught me words from daily life, quizzed me, and kept me accountable.
My Japanese improved significantly, especially for JLPT. The combination of conversational learning with structured spaced repetition turned out to be exactly what I needed.
I built the teacher I wished I had. Now it's yours.
